Q: What is Energy Star Portfolio Manager?
A: EPA’s ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager tool helps you measure and track energy use, water use, and greenhouse gas emissionsof your buildings, all in a secure online environment.

Q: What is the Urbana-Champaign ENERGY STAR Challenge?
A: The Challenge asks commercial buildings to benchmark, track, and improve their building energy performance (electricity and natural gas) on ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager.  This friendly competition will culminate in recognition and awards for the best performaning buildings in early 2015.

Q: Can any type of commercial building participate?
A: Yes!  While only certain building types can get a 1 to 100 Energy Star Score, all buildings can benchmark, track, and receive an Energy Use Intensity score which expresses a building’s energy use as a function of its size or other characteristics.

Q: Do I need to have an engineer or other specialist employed to participate?
A: No.  Getting a benchmark score is simply a matter of inputting data.  Challenge organizers have free technical assistance available for any and every step of this process.  Just ask!

Q: Are there any costs to participate?
A: No.  Joining is free.  Using Energy Star Portfolio Manager is free.  Technical assistance is free.  The expenditures on energy efficiency encouraged by the Challenge are investments that will lower your power bills.
